Community work

Johan Calitz Safaris works in close collaboration with the Niassa Game Reserves management team to assure that the nearby local communities benefit, both directly and indirectly, from sport hunting as a land use form. The majority of the organisations seasonal and permanent employees are employed from the local populace, providing a direct financial benefit to the families involved.

The operator directly employs and equips seventeen game scouts, whose sole responsibility is to control and monitor illegal fishing and hunting in the area. These individuals are funded directly from hunting clients' daily hunting rates, without which this anti-poaching unit would not be possible.

Apart from the above, a certain amount of community quota is set aside in order to attempt a reduction in poaching rates. The operator assists in the harvesting of these animals in order to ensure that the process is both selective and timely. The meat derived of this quota is distributed to the Msawise and Mavago community as per allocations managed by the reserves management.

Local, licensed fishermen are also allowed access to the Lugenda River. Fish derived from these activities act as an important source of protein to many people within the Niassa region. Illegal fishing methods are strictly monitored to preserve this valuable resource and illegal harvests are confiscated to promote a sustainable and legal fishing industry. The latter are donated to the local clinic and school at Msawise village. Equipment accommodating illegal activities are confiscated and destroyed in severe cases.

Mozambique is seen as a stable country with an encouraging economic growth rate, however it sadly houses amputees who fell victim to landmines during the country's civil war ranging from 1977-1992. The operator has been involved in a program which provided these unfortunate victims with wheelchairs. It should be noted that the Niassa Province has been declared land mine free and after intensive clean up programs the area is safe from land mines once again.
