Concession
The concession is known as Block L2, or the Luatize,
and comprises an area of approximately 4180 square km2. . This hunting block is
located 150 kilometres south of Tanzania, in northern Mozambique and falls
partially within the world renowned Niassa National Game Reserve. The area
boasts two main permanent rivers namely the Luatize and Lugenda. These total a
length just short of 200 kilometres and have countless lesser streams, which
occur in the form of seasonal outlets.
Apart from the above the area is blessed with a
multitude of granite Inselbergs, the highest being the Mosale mountain range,
which protrudes 580 metres above ground level. The Luatize offers a small piece
of the old Africa that is so often longed for in many adventurers hearts,
offering opportunities at great trophies ranging from dangerous game such as
elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, hippopotamus and crocodiles to a large
variety of plains-game like the popular Roosevelt sable, the rare Lichtenstein
hartebeest and several others, including waterbuck, reedbuck, eland, kudu, bush
pig, Chobe bushbuck and many more.
Johan Calitz Safaris has a well trained
anti-poaching unit, which is funded from visiting hunters' daily fees. This
unit in combination with an intensive wildlife monitoring program, under the
guidance of the Niassa Reserve and operator's management, has lead to wildlife
populations increasing at a rapid rate.
Camp and other employees are sourced from
surrounding communities and the visitors are exposed to a very friendly and
helpful local populace. Traditional fishermen are encountered in the area who
act as a very useful source of information on local game movements. The area
further radiates an air of mystery, derived from interesting folklore. |
